Services We Provide

The Environmental Services Department provides the following services:

Additionally, we provide day-to-day contact with the public to resolve complaints or problems related to any of the above.

What We Do

The Shelby County Environmental Services Department also provides the following services for Shelby County:

  • Manages franchise for garbage collection in unincorporated Shelby County
  • Accepts applications and issues landfill user permits (at no charge to the customer)
  • Responds and investigates possible contamination sites for soil, water, and air
  • Assists the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) in the enforcement of burn laws and regulations, assuring a safe and healthy environment for the citizens of Shelby County
  • Provides a regional landfill to accept trash, garbage, and debris Monday through Saturday for commercial waste haulers and the general public
  • Maintains the Shelby County Solid Waste Management Plan (Adopted 4/13/2025)

The residential garbage service provider for unincorporated Shelby County is Waste Management. Please see garbage service page for additional details.

Recycling

Shelby County is providing recycling receptacles at the Heardmont Park location for cardboard and paper only.

Shelby County is provident recycling receptacles at the Dunnavant Valley Fields location for cardboard and paper as well as aluminum and plastic products.

Other businesses within the county, such as Publix and Target, offer limited recycle collections for plastics. Please visit their websites for complete details.

ADEM Announces Burn Ban

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) is reminding Alabamians of the open burning ban effective for 12 counties. The ban, which is designed to protect air quality, is effective from May through October each year. Counties under this yearly burn ban include:

  • Baldwin
  • DeKalb
  • Etowah
  • Jefferson
  • Lawrence
  • Madison
  • Mobile
  • Montgomery
  • Morgan
  • Russell
  • Shelby
  • Talladega
